EXETER, N.H. — A medical technician accused of infecting 30 people with hepatitis C at Exeter Hospital was “the ultimate con artist … who pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes,” according to a statement issued Friday by the hospital.
Coworkers said David M. Kwiatkowski appeared to be “on something” and was “engaging in other suspicious behavior,” according to the U.S. attorney’s office. The concerns were evaluated, and Kwiatkowski was able to provide plausible explanations related either to medical issues he had previously made claims about, or to family crises, Foster’s Daily Democrat reports.
“David had stories for everything that pulled at your heart strings and we had no reason to disbelieve him,” Dr. Thomas Wharton, medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Unit at Exeter Hospital, said in a statement. “David claimed to have several important medical conditions, and we had no reason to challenge this.” The hospital also did not have the legal right to investigate Kwiatkowski’s medical claims.
