Published: November 14, 2014

Elon University’s Sigma Pi fraternity was closed Nov. 3 for three years after school officials found the hazing of new members had occurred. The chapter did appeal the decision, but was rejected, as an Elon dean upheld the suspension on Nov. 10. The fraternity could return in the fall of 2017 if it meets certain guidelines.

The university’s student school newspaper, The Elon Pendulum, wrote that school officers found out about the hazing violations in October. According to a university police report, three male new members suffered minor injuries when they were forced to lie down on bottle caps.

The national chapter of Sigma Pi also revoked the charter of the fraternity, saying it had been investigated in previous semesters for hazing, according to the Greensboro News-Record.

The 12 of out 47 members who live in the university-owned home will have until the start of the winter semester to find housing.
