ECSU Security Officer Convicted of Sex Assault

Published: June 10, 2013

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Anthony Butler, a dorm security officer at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), was convicted Monday in a dorm room sexual assault case.

The case prompted ECSU’s police chief and school chancellor to resign. It also led to an investigation this spring by local police, who determined that campus police failed to investigate as many as 126 crime reports — including 18 sexual assault reports — dating back to 2007.

Butler’s victim testified that not only did campus police fail to investigate her complaint, college administrators, including from the Human Resources Department, pressured her to drop it, reports the Virginia-Pilot. Butler was found guilty of sexual battery, breaking and entering and sexual assault.
