Eastern Michigan University (EMU) will soon be spending more than $1.7 million for more law enforcement officers, improved lighting and more video surveillance.
Nearly half of that amount, $820,000, will pay to expand EMU’s police department, reports Detroit’s NBC affiliate. In the fall the school will have 43 officers.
Additionally, EMU’s Department of Public Safety will be renovated at a cost of $175,000.
Security cameras will also be installed at a cost of about $375,000, and $87,000 will be spent to improve perimeter lighting. About $175,000 will be spent to improve emergency notification signage, and $110,000 will be spent installing automated external defibrillators.
EMU officials were prompted to boost security on and off campus after an EMU football player was murdered last fall.
