Eastern Michigan Increases Security

YPSILANTI, Mich., In response to a rash of sexual assaults on or near campus, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has tightened security.

Those improvements include the hiring of six student officers, increasing the lighting on campus, offering a self-defense course, increasing the visibility of the university escort service and communicating to the campus community the importance of safety precautions.

According to The Michigan Daily, in the last nine months, six sexual assaults have occurred in Ypsilanti, two on the EMU campus. The most recent attack occurred Dec. 12 at a tanning salon. Police believe the incidents may be related but say it is too early to tell.
