STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — E-mails reportedly indicate that former Penn State President Graham Spanier and two other former university officials were aware that convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky had abused a boy in a shower in 2001, but chose to cover up the incident.
Spanier and the two other officials allegedly decided to handle the incident using a “humane” approach before contacting outside authorities, according to the E-mails. But records show no authorities were ever contacted, CNN reports. In an exchange from February 26 to February 28, 2001, Spanier acknowledges that the university could be “vulnerable” for not reporting the abuse.
The E-mails refer to Sandusky as “the subject” or “the person” and the children — some of whom might have been Sandusky’s victims — are called “guests.”
