Duke University temporarily suspended the activity of 10 sororities on campus after a student was hospitalized Jan. 30.
The suspension, announced the night of the alcohol-related incident, affected more than half of the university’s sororities, according to uloop.com.
But hours after the suspension was announced, the university partially lifted the bans and reconsidered its position.

The change in tone was the result of a discussion with chapter leaders about “steps that can be taken to undermine a social culture…that is excessively focused on alcohol use and abuse.”
The student who was hospitalized was listed in critical condition as of Jan. 31, although it is not known which sorority she was in.
Campus Safety magazine has reported on a series of hazing-related deaths in the past as students ‘rush’ to earn membership in sororities and fraternities.
