Duke Settles Lawsuits With 3 Exonerated Lacrosse Players

Published: June 18, 2007

RALEIGH, N.C. – Duke University has settled lawsuits with three of its former lacrosse players who were falsely indicted on charges of rape last year.

The school had suspended Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans after they were accused of raping and kidnapping a stripper hired to perform at a team party. All three were eventually cleared of the charges, and Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred June 16 by a disciplinary committee. Nifong announced he would be resigning his elected position as of July 13, but Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson ordered he be suspended immediately.

The specifics of the financial settlement with Duke were not disclosed. Attorneys for all three players are also preparing to file a lawsuit against Nifong.
