MEXICO CITY — Thanks to improved emergency preparedness tactics, there were no deaths after a 7.4 earthquake hit the Mexican capital on Tuesday. The quake was the largest experienced by the city since 1985, when 10,000 people were killed.
By the time the quake hit, all 56 students from Montessori Kid’s Place had already evacuated, The Christian Science Monitor reports. Last year, the school director purchased two alarms that detect seismic activity. The school has been performing earthquake drills monthly.
The city has implemented stricter building codes in recent years. Additionally, schools, hospitals and other institutions have been holding regular evacuation drills.
