The State Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted the city of New Brunswick, N.J., with $476,000 to fund pedestrian safety projects, including the creation of no-parking zones by crosswalks. The grant is intended to encourage children to safely walk or bike to school.
An infrastructure grant of $167,000 will pay for the creation of no-parking zones and another $162,000 will help the city fund enforcement of those zones. A $147,000 grant, funded through the New Jersey’s Safe Streets to Transit program, will pay for pedestrian-safety improvements at the train station.
The 2008 Safe Routes to School initiative by DOT has provided grants ranging from $8,000 to $300,000 for projects in 33 municipalities.
