Domestic Violence on Campus: Kansas Man Shoots Wife at School After Dropping Children Off

A deputy who responded to the elementary school shot the husband after the man pointed his gun at his wife’s head.

WICHITA, Kan. – A man shot his wife outside of Cessna Elementary School after both had taken Lyft to campus with their children to drop them off.

The school shooting happened around 9:15 a.m. on Monday, reports KMBC. A witness saw the man shoot his wife in the chest after both had exited the rideshare vehicle and got into an argument. The wife then ran into the school seeking help, and her husband chased after her.

When a deputy arrived at the school, he discovered the pair with the man pointing the gun at his wife’s head, reports KWCH. The deputy took cover, and when the man stepped away from the woman, the officer shot the husband.

Both the wife and husband were then taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The husband was arrested.

Law Enforcement Arrived at the School Shooting Scene Within 2 Minutes

During the incident, the campus was placed on lockout, meaning no one was allowed to enter the campus, reports KSN. No students, teachers, or staff members were injured, however, a staff member who witnessed the shooting rushed several children who were outside the school inside to safety. The couple’s two children were already inside the school when the husband shot his wife.

The deputy who responded to the school shooting arrived at the scene within two minutes, reports USA TODAY.

The identities of the husband and wife involved in the shooting have not been made public.

About an hour after the ordeal, parents were given the option to take their children home. Counselors were made available to students and staff members on Monday and Tuesday.
