ABERDEEN, Miss. — The city of Aberdeen has decided that its police officers will no longer serve as the primary resource officers for the Aberdeen School District following an incident at the May graduation ceremony.
In July the Aberdeen School Board voted to form an Aberdeen School District Campus Police Department, the Monroe Journal reports. The district must provide uniforms and supplies, and ensure that its officers are licensed to carry a firearm, according to Mississippi Department of Education guidelines.
The Mississippi Department of Education also stipulates that campus police be certified law enforcement officers with three years of experience who will complete 40 hours of continuing education training each year.
