ALACHUA, Fla. —The Alachua County School District instructs every student in Internet safety as early as kindergarten. As of last year, the districts are required to educate students – some schools bring in experts to speak on the topic; others use Web sites specifically designed to train children on safe Internet usage.
The district’s media manager, Nancy Case, began designing a comprehensive Internet safety site over three years ago, the Gainesville Sun reports. Case tells students to only use their first name on the Internet and never give out personal information. She also recommends students tell their parents or teachers if they become uncomfortable with anything they see or read online.
At Littlewood Elementary School, students are instructed in safe Internet use via a Web site called “The Three Little Cyberpigs.” Kelly Moore, the school’s media specialist, says the site uses the story of the Big Bad Wolf pretending to be a sheep to demonstrate to students that Internet users are not always who they claim to be.
At Fort Clarke Middle School, a speaker from the Attorney General Office speaks to students about cyberbullying and sexting.
