District Settles With Family of Sex Assault Victim

LINCOLN, Neb. — Lincoln Public Schools has reached a settlement with the family of a boy who was sexually assaulted in Sept. 2005 at Arnold Elementary School by a man who entered the campus by walking past an unmanned security desk.

The settlement totals about $120,000, with $75,000 going into an annuity for the student, The Republic reports. It will be paid in eight installments between 2019 and 2050.

Joseph Siems Jr., who was described as mentally ill by family members and lived in an assisted living center, entered the school when no one was at the front desk. Siems then went into a restroom and performed oral sex on a then 5-year-old boy. He was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison.
