District Lays Off Half of Its Security Officers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Springfield School District is laying off four school safety officers to eliminate $355,000 from its $9.5 million deficit budget. This will cut the district’s number of officers in half.

One officer will be posted at each of its three high schools and one at Douglas Alternative School, The State Journal-Register reports. Off-duty officers will patrol part-time at Washington, Franklin and Grant middle schools instead of full-time school security officers.

The city of Springfield will have to pay $205,000 because the district pays 75 percent of its school safety officers’ salaries and benefits.
