District Lays Off 19 Safety Officers in Wake of Budget Cuts

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Seven sentries from East High School have been laid off due to budget cuts. A total of 19 school safety officers in the district are also being cut.

In total, 140 non-teaching employees in the Board Of Education Non-Teaching Employees Union (BENTE) have received layoff notices, WHAM reports. That includes clerical, custodial and secretarial staff.

Charles Brightful, a sentry who was laid off, said the cuts come at a time when the district should be adding security, not taking it away.
