District, ACLU Settle in Pledge of Allegiance Lawsuit

PITTSBURGH — The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) signed an agreement with Brownsville Area School District to settle a lawsuit filed by a girl who said she was disciplined for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

As part of the settlement, the district must allow the girl to sit during the pledge, as well as announce at its next school board meeting that other students have the same right under the First Amendment, The Associated Press reports.

The district must also expunge the detention and in-school suspension the girl received from her record.
