Improving Officer Morale
Officers will never perform to the best of their abilities if they feel overworked and underappreciated. Good department heads should always be conscious of their officers’ morale. I’ve heard from several police chiefs that host annual award ceremonies for their officers, which is a great way to acknowledge their accomplishments and honor officers for going above and beyond. Department heads should strive to understand how their officers are feeling and encourage feedback.
Biola University Police Chief John Ojeisekhoba explained his opinion on the subject after being named Campus Safety’s Director of the Year. “My personnel come first. I can set all the strategies and plans I want, but if I don’t have the right people in place, I might as well flush the strategies down the toilet,” Ojeisekhoba says. “They get the job done every day. If you invest in them and show them you care, they take ownership of the job and the vision of the department.”
