The Department of Homeland Security warned in a bulletin issued this month that the use of wireless technology in medical devices carries security risks that the healthcare industry might not be prepared to handle.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the manufacture of these medical devices in regards to design, but does not have rules on how they are connected and configured within a network, PCWorld reports. Medical facilities must ensure that the devices — such as pacemakers and defibrillators — are protected from hackers.
Even though these devices have built-in security features, they often go unused because of the complexity of the technology or user ignorance.
