Dept. of Ed Offering Free Credit Monitoring To Borrowers Affected By Breach

WASHINGTON – The student loan borrowers whose information was inadvertently posted on the Department of Education’s Web site last week will be eligible for free credit monitoring.

The Department of Education made the announcement Aug. 23 regarding the 32,000 federal direct student loan holders affected by the data breach. Those involved are people who used the department’s Web site Aug. 20-22. The department will contact the borrowers affected and offer them free credit monitoring provided by Affiliated Computers Services Inc.

According to a department official, the problem was caused by a routine software upgrade.
