Published: December 15, 2008

A federal grant may help improve the health and safety of students at five schools in Bibb County, Ga.

The Safe Route to School Program, administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation, encourages students to walk or bike to school instead of taking a bus or riding with parents.

The goal of the program is to improve the health of children and reduce the car emissions into the atmosphere. If the grant is approved, nearly $500,000 will be awarded and managed by the school board.
