Three people are facing attempted murder and robbery charges after a pizza delivery driver was shot in the face while making a delivery to East Stroudsburg University.
The victim, 58-year-old Richard Labar, is currently on life support with no brain activity at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
Pennsylvania state police say the victim, a delivery person for Domino’s Pizza, made a delivery to the 400 block of Normal Street located on the Pennsylvania campus.
When he exited the vehicle, he was ambushed in an attempted robbery and was shot in the face, according to WNEP.
“After the driver denied he had any money several times, the driver was shot in the face and a money bag was removed from his person,” reads a news release from police.
Israel Berrios, 17, his girlfriend Carolina Carmona, 30, and her brother Salvador Roberts, 21, are being charged in the attempted robbery and shooting. None of the suspects are students at ESU.
The suspects fled the scene and Labar was found by ESU campus police. State police and the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office were then called to the scene.
Carmona was the one who placed the order and Berrios says he is the one who demanded money and pulled the trigger, according to police.
In addition to attempted homicide and robbery, all three suspects were arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and hindering apprehension. They are being held without bail at the Monroe County Correctional Facility.
Police also say Berrios admitted to being the perpetrator in a string of robberies on the campus in recent months and to having recently robbed another Domino’s delivery person.
Justine Cramer, who lives near the scene of the crime, says she knows Carmona personally.
“I know she babysat my daughter and stole $2,000 worth of DVDs just a week ago. There’s an investigation about that. I called the cops about that,” says Cramer.
Lambda Iota, an ESU sorority, set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Labar and his family, reports The Morning Call.
Lambda Iota president Johna Palladino says the donations will be used to pay for medical expenses and to assist Labar’s family during the holiday season.
An alert was sent out by EDU officials about seven hours after the shooting occurred.
