WASHINGTON — D.C. Public Schools officials are considering moving campus security in-house. The change could potentially reduce security costs from $18 million to $11.4 million, according to an auditor.
The district has experienced continual problems with contracting companies over the years, The Washington Examiner reports. The district currently contracts with U.S. Security Associates, which provides personnel at city buildings and public schools. The company continually failed to intercept undercover D.C. police officers who snuck bombs into local government buildings.
The district is expected to make a decision about the contract in June. If security was moved in-house, the district would hire 269 guards who could not make arrests and 22 who could. None would be armed.
