MIAMI – A third victim of Wednesday’s Miami Dade Community College’s parking garage collapse died this morning.
Fifty-three-year-old construction worker Samuel Perez was trapped under the rubble for 13 hours before being rescued and taken to the hospital, where he expired, reports the Associated Press.
The other two men who died were Jose Calderon, 60, and Carlos Hurtado de Mendoza, 48. All three of the deceased had worked for subcontractors of Ajax Building Corp., which was the general contractor.
Rescue workers continue to search for the last trapped victim, Robert Budhoo, an electrical contractor. Family members say he has not answered his cell phone, reports Good Morning America.
Police say at least 12 contractors were working at the site when the collapse occurred.
There will be no classes for the remainder of the week. However, full time employees for the West Campus are required to report to the North Campus on Thursday and Friday.
“In the coming days, the College leadership will reassess the status of operations at the Campus for next week, and will inform the College community accordingly,” college leadership said in a written statement.
