LEXINGTON, Ky.- The personal information of approximately 6,500 University of Kentucky students and alumni has been reported stolen.
A faculty member’s computer drive containing the personal and academic data, including Social Security numbers (SSN), of students enrolled in his classes from 1988 to 2006 were reported missing May 26. The school uses SSNs as identification numbers.
University officials are in the process of contacting those affected by the theft. They have sent letters to each, encouraging them to check their credit for unusual activity.
Also in May, the university inadvertently made public the information of 1,300 employees for nearly three weeks.
