HANOVER, N.H. – A Dartmouth College writing professor caused quite an uproar May 4 after she sent an E-mail to students threatening to sue them with a discrimination lawsuit for disagreeing with her in class.
According to news reports, Priya Venkatesan had been employed at the institution from July 2005 until April 2008. In her E-mail, which contained several typos, she warned students in her 2008 writing class that she was going to write a book, detailing the experiences she had with the students. She added that she would “name names.”
In addition, the Dartmouth graduate said the students violated Title VII, anti-federal discrimination laws, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Venkatesan is of Indian ancestry. After realizing she cannot sue students for employment discrimination, Venkatesan plans to file a lawsuit against Dartmouth College, which will include the names of students in her list of grievances.
