DALLAS – The City Council’s public safety committee unanimously voted to ban cell phone use while driving – including text messaging – in Dallas school zones Feb. 19.
The regulation would be implemented when school zone hours are active. Motorists would be able to talk on their phones using “hands free” devices or only if they were calling 911 in the event of an emergency.
If the entire City Council votes to approve the regulation, the city will install 2,623 notification signs throughout the 651 schools zones. The signs could cost $144,000, officials said. If violators are caught, the revenue produced by the $200 cell phone ban fine would essentially pay for the signs.
