NEW YORK — Antimicrobial copper surfaces in intensive care units kill 97 percent of bacteria that can cause infections, according to a clinical trial.
The results of the trial, which were presented at the World Health Organization’s first International Conference on Prevention and Infection Control (ICPIC) in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 1, showed a 40 percent reduction in the risk of acquiring an infection, Reuters reports.
Nearly one in every 20 patients in the United States receives a hospital-acquired infection, resulting in 100,000 lives lost each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
