Control of L.A. School Security May Shift to Principals

Published: April 11, 2006

LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) board member has proposed several changes to reduce the level of violence on area campuses.

Board member Mike Lansing wants the LAUSD to give more control over security to principals, improve training and eliminate the disciplinary student transfer program. If his recommendations are accepted, security aides would be deployed for six, rather than three hours, a move that would cost the LAUSD about $2.5 million.

Additionally, security aides would receive more training and be required to wear Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) uniforms. Principals, rather than LASPD area sergeants, would also review the performance of school police officers.

Problem students would also not be transferred from school to school, unless safety was a factor.
