LONDON — Police have launched an investigation into three deaths at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, northwest England. It is believe the deaths may have resulted from the patients receiving saline solution contaminated with insulin.
The contamination was discovered after a nurse reported a higher-than-normal number of patients with low blood sugar levels, the Associated Press reports. Detectives are awaiting post-mortem results to determine whether the contamination was the cause of death.
Hospital officials have since increased security at the facility.
