MILFORD, Conn. — A union representing security guards for Milford Public Schools has filed a labor grievance with the state of Connecticut concerning the district’s plan to hire greeters for elementary schools.
Currently, MPS plans to hire eight non-unionized greeters to sign in visitors, give directions, report violations of school rules and manage visitor logs to lessen the load for school secretaries, The New Haven Register reports. However, security guards for the district, who perform similar duties, believe they bring more skills to the job since they are trained in CPR, de-escalation techniques and first aid.
The district, which employs four security guards — two at each high school — notes that hiring the greeters would save money. Each greeter would have a salary of $16,000, compared to roughly 21,000 per security guard.
