PLANO, Texas — A shooting at Collin College on Sunday night sent a male student to the hospital and prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order for residents in the campus housing complex.
Details of the Verbal Dispute and Altercation
Authorities said Courtney Jacob Johnson, 23, shot another male student at least twice before running toward the nearby student apartments. Officers found the victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, reports ABC8.
Both Johnson and the victim are enrolled for the upcoming fall semester and live in Collin College’s student housing.
Police said the incident began as an argument in the student housing parking lot and escalated into a physical fight. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:15 p.m. at the Plano Campus student housing apartments, Plano Police Department spokesperson Officer Andre Smith told NBCDFW.
Authorities said that immediately after the shooting, Johnson entered an apartment occupied by someone that both parties knows but who was not involved in the incident, reports Fox4News. He was taken into custody without incident within 20 minutes of the first officer’s arrival.
Shelter-in-Place Ordered
As the investigation continued, students staying in housing were instructed to shelter in place. The lockdown order was lifted at about 10 p.m., after the suspect was detained.
