College Student Used Malware to Steal Passwords, Change Grades

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former student at the University of Central Missouri has admitted to using malware to steal and sell databases, change grades and siphon funds from other students’ accounts. His alleged accomplice has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Daniel J. Fowler, 21, pleaded guilty in federal court to computer hacking conspiracy and computer intrusion, The Register reports. Fowler and his accomplice Joseph A. Camp allegedly installed the malware on public computers to capture passwords to the university network and to spy on computer users via webcam.

Fowler faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison without parole, a $500,000 fine and an order to pay restitution.
