CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city council here has approved an ordinance that allows University Hospitals Health System police officers to make misdemeanor arrests, enforce traffic laws and ticket illegally parked cars on streets.
The ordinance gives the Cleveland Police Department has the authority to create a memorandum of understanding with UH, which will govern how the two police agencies will interact under the UH officers’ expanded powers, Cleveland.com reports.
Under the agreement, UH officer would follow the city’s general police orders for making arrests and handling disturbances on public property.
Other hospitals in the city, including the Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth Medical Center have similar arrangements with the city.
