CLEVELAND — Seventy-five safety and security officers were laid off by the Cleveland school district as part of $13.2 million in budget cuts approved by the school board in October.
In addition, the district will not fill 18 vacant security positions to help achieve $888,000 in savings from the security budget, The Plain Dealer reports. The cuts will eliminate about one-third of the district’s security officers, but the full-time security workforce remains mostly intact.
Officials of Teamsters Local 436 said the cuts will hurt the district’s ability to protect students.
