CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson University officials and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) are investigating an off-campus party that took place Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in which white students were allegedly drinking malt liquor and wearing black face in mockery of the holiday. University officials recently learned of the Jan. 14 incident from photos posted on the Internet.
The events “appeared to mock and disparage African Americans” according Clemson President James Barker in a letter issued to students and faculty. The letter also states he was “appalled, angered and disappointed” by the behavior.
In an unsigned letter of apology, party organizers stated, “We invited all races and types of peoples and never meant any racial harm.”
The NAACP is investigating the party as well as at least three other incidents at different colleges that occurred on the same weekend.
