CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University and the Corvallis City Council are debating over the city’s plan to add more police officers to the area due to students’ off-campus misconduct that has spilled into neighboring territories.
On Monday, the council approved a property tax levy that calls for the addition of three police officers. The city will add a fourth if Oregon State bears the $100,000 for another officer. If the university refuses to contribute, the city will only hire two officers, the Associated Press reports.
University officials said that it can’t turn state funds intended for higher education to another public entity. Additionally, the university plans to increase staffing in its student conduct office to handle problems that develop from off-campus behavior.
Corvallis residents will vote on the levy in November.
