Cisco Experts to Speak at Campus Safety Conference on IT’s role in Campus Safety

TORRANCE, Calif. – Maintaining a safe, secure environment is a top priority for every college and university. This can be challenging when systems don’t communicate well with each other due to a lack of interoperability between the different systems of the two or three first responder organizations.

Educators are aware that technology can help improve school safety and security. Traditional physical safety systems on campuses have minimal interconnectivity with conventional safety and communication systems. Networks are providing collaborative services that enhance safety on campus, and IT plays a vital role in the convergence between physical safety systems and network infrastructures.

On Tuesday, February 19th from 3pm – 5pm, Phylis Miquel, global education solutions manager for Cisco Systems, and Sgt. (Seal Beach Police Department, Ret.) Dean Zanone, US/Canada account manager, public safety vertical for Cisco Systems will present a two-hour session on Enhancing Physical Safety with Networked Services at the Campus Safety Conference at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif. Their session explores the convergence of physical safety systems and IT, explains why, and discusses IT’s role in campus safety. The program also covers how IT can provide more value with services that overcome the limitations of physical safety systems.

Miquel is the global education solutions manager for Cisco Systems. In this role, she is responsible for researching the IP technology trends in education, including those for curriculum, instructional technology, facilities and safety. She works directly with organizations across the world to develop IP-based solutions that address specific issues and ensure educational organizations maximize their existing IP technology infrastructure.

For the last 10 years of his 27 year career, Zanone had the pleasure of meeting with public and private information managers and fellow emergency responders to discuss IP-based public safety applications and network capabilities. Since his retirement from public safety in 2003, he has been working with Cisco Systems to research, evaluate and develop IP standards based technologies directed at benefiting public safety professionals.
