NEW YORK — Dr. Ramanathan Raju, chief executive of Cook County Health and Hospital System in Chicago, has been named as president of the Health and Hospitals Corp., in New York.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Raju’s appointment on Tuesday. In accepting the position, Raju, 61, returns to the $7 billion public health system, where he was chief operating officer before leaving in 2011, The New York Times reports.
Health and Hospitals Corp., the nation’s largest public health system, has a $250 million operating deficit, which many are hoping Raju can turn around.
During his time at the Cook County hospital system, Raju was credited with quickly cutting $23 million from a $411 million annual taxpayer subsidy in fiscal 2012.
