Chicago Campus Safety Conference Announces Keynote Speakers

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and Safe Havens International’s Michael Dorn will be the keynote speakers for the Chicago Campus Safety Conference July 13-14.

Framingham, Mass. and Rosemont, Ill.Campus Safety magazine is pleased to announced that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and Safe Havens International Executive Director Michael Dorn will be the keynote speakers for the Chicago Campus Safety Conference taking place July 13-14 at the Hilton Rosemont Chicago in Rosemont, Ill.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart will deliver the opening keynote Monday morning, July 13. Since becoming Sheriff in 2006, he has introduced sweeping changes at the Cook County Jail, the nation’s largest single site jail, aggressively re-structured the Sheriff’s Police force, and improved operations of the Court Services Department. At the Cook County Department of Corrections, the Sheriff oversees a population of over 12,000 that includes inmates both housed on-site and ordered to alternative programs such as electronic monitoring. Sheriff Dart will provide an overview his perspective on how colleges and local law enforcement can work together to make campuses safer for everyone.

“The 2015 Campus Safety Conference is a great opportunity to meet with campus safety officials to discuss how local law enforcement can assist with issues that arise on K-12, college, and hospital campuses. I look forward to speaking at this event,” says Dart.

Michael Dorn, executive director of Safe Havens International, the world’s largest campus safety center, will deliver the closing keynote Tuesday afternoon, July 14. During his 25 year public safety career, Michael served as a lieutenant for the Mercer University Police Department, as the Chief of Police for the Bibb County Public Schools in Georgia, as the School Safety Specialist for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency – Office of the Governor, and as the Lead Program Manager of the Terrorism Division of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security. He is also the author of Staying Alive – How to Act Fast and Survive Deadly Encounters. Dorn’s dynamic, powerful and practical session will show specific techniques campus organizations can use to engage their staff, students and patients in their safety efforts. The take-aways from this session will focus on brief activities or exercise that can be used to make people safer without creating unrealistic levels of fear.

“While there is a deadly trend to put all of our eggs in one basket by either relying on technology or conversely on behavioral approaches, my address at the Campus Safety Conference will provide a holistic and comprehensive examination of how we can spot and react to danger using today’s security technologies in concert with the latest research on the awesome power of the human brain,” says Dorn.
