CHICAGO — After announcing that it would close more than 50 schools to save money, the city of Chicago plans to hire 600 adults next month to help students arrive safely to their new schools as part of the Safe Passage program. So far, the city has received 11,000 requests from concerned parents to participate in the program, NBC Chicago reports.
The program is aimed to help younger students, who may have to cross gang boundaries to get to school, arrive to their destinations safely. Officials for Chicago Public Schools pledged to spend millions to enhance the Safe Passage program, which stations adults along key routes and alert police of any problems.
