Chicago Parents Could Be Held Liable For Children’s Crime

Published: May 21, 2006

CHICAGO – The Chicago City Council is considering a measure that would increase fines, impose possible jail time and even make parents pay for their children’s offenses.

The measure is intended to crack down on school violence and strengthen the safety zones around campuses. If passed, anyone convicted of battery within 1,000 feet of a Chicago school could be fined $500 or even $1,000 or serve up to six months in jail. If an offender is under the age of 18, his or her parents could be forced to pay the fine.

The council is expected to consider the measure May 24.
