Chicago District Plans For $7M Security Camera Installation
CHICAGO — The Chicago Public School District is planning to spend $7 million to install security cameras at more than a dozen of its campuses, despite a $612 million budget deficit.
A pilot camera system was launched in 2009 at Fenger High School after a student was beaten to death, ABC News reports. The system has reduced arrests by 79 percent and misconduct by 59 percent. There has also been an increase in students’ standardized test scores.
The proposed system would place 50 to 80 cameras at 14 high schools. Two other schools are already part of the pilot system.
