Chemistry Lab Blaze Destroys N.C. High School

GIBSONVILLE, N.C. – Eastern Guilford High School has been destroyed by fire.

The blaze started at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the chemistry lab. A teacher tried to put the flame out with an extinguisher but soon had to pull the alarm. During the incident, teachers, students and staff were evacuated to an area church.

The facility was deemed a total loss by authorities, and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

The fire leaves the school’s 1,060 students without a place to attend class for the remainder of the year. Thursday and Friday classes were cancelled. School board members will meet Nov. 3 to determine how to resolve the situation.
