SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California College and University Police Chiefs Association (CCUPCA) has issued the following legislative alert regarding bill number Assembly Bill 2470 (AB 2470), which was created in February 2008. If approved universities will no longer allow the use of BB or pellet guns on college campuses:
As you’ve probably heard by now, CCUPCA is sponsoring a very important piece of legislation this year, that will not only help us keep our campuses safe, but should significantly decrease the number of property damage calls your department takes. AB 2470, authored by Assemblywoman Betty Karnette (D – Long Beach), will make it illegal to possess BB, pellet or any air pressure type guns on California’s college and university campuses (except in specially designated areas). I have attached a copy of the bill language for your review. Please note that we have asked to amend the language to include metallic and non-metallic projectiles – but it will not yet be reflected in the attached.
It is very important that we all get involved and be our own best advocates!!! Please write a letter to Assemblywoman Karnette offering the support of your department. You can send your letter to Assemblywoman Karnette via e-mail to [email protected].
But, don’t stop there! If your campus has a Dean of Discipline, ask his/her office to send a letter of support, ask the faculty association, the student association(s), or anyone else on campus that you think would be interested. Ask your partners in the city police department. The more official support the greater chance we have to get those aye votes!
On March 25, at 9:00 a.m., AB 2470 will be heard and voted on by the Assembly Public Safety Committee. The members are listed below. If one of these folks is the Assembly member for your campus area, a letter directly to them would be extremely effective. For your convenience, I have added a sample letter below. It is imperative to get these letters out quickly that your campus can be listed in the official committee analysis.
Thank you so much for helping CCUPCA reach our legislative goals & keep our campuses safe for all!
Sincerely,
Cheryl Sprague
