NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — The Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS) was awarded a $250,000 Fire Prevention and Safety grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for an educational project targeting campus fire safety professionals.
The grant provides funding for CCFS to continue its critically acclaimed Firewise Campus training seminars across the country. These classes afford fire safety professionals a chance to gain an understanding of successful training methodologies for the college age group, as well as receive tools and resources that they can use to effectively educate students and work further to provide a fire-safe campus environment.
“The Center for Campus Fire Safety plays a critical role in training college fire safety officers who in turn educate thousands of students on their local campuses. These federal funds will help support 300 campus fire safety officers with information, materials, and resources,” Congressman John Tierney said. “I continue to believe that investing in programs, such as this one, helps to keep our students, our campuses, and our communities safe and productive.”
A primary mission for CCFS is to assist its campus-based colleagues, administrators, government officials and members of the fire service in working together and raising the consciousness of college students about fire safe behaviors at a critical point in their lives.
Firewise Campus training is designed specifically for those professional who have a part in delivering fire safety education to college students and is intended to help them succeed in that undertaking.
“The Firewise Campus safety program provides lifesaving fire safety knowledge that serves to keep students safe during their time at college,” said J.William.Degnan, New Hampshire State Fire Marshal and president of the National Association of State Fire Marshals. “The knowledge instilled will be carried with them for the rest of their lives.”
