SUMMERSIDE, Prince Edward Island – Canada’s Prince County Hospital is redesigning the layout and upgrading security in the emergency room, which will cost the province $500,000.
The increasing number of incidents forced the hospital to seek the upgrade, said the hospital’s executive director Barbara Worth.
The facility will now have a security firm that will continuously monitor the hospital. The triage area will also be redesigned to allow nurses to make quick exits. Additionally, the admittance area will upgraded to ensure the safety of staff.
According to Health Minister Dough Currie, the provincial government has reserved $500,000 for the renovation of the emergency room.
The staff expressed concerns, explaining that they felt a lack of respect from patients, and those patients also lost patience when waiting to receive treatment.
Worth explained that security issues are becoming a big concern among Prince Edward Island hospitals, as more violent episodes occur against healthcare professionals.
