NEW YORK – With college safety being a heightened concern this school year, there’s unquestionable consensus that updated campus security measures are essential for safeguarding our nation’s youth. Campus Safety Now (CampusSafetyNow.com), a consortium of organizations dedicated to educating and supporting the public with resources for enhanced campus safety and emergency preparedness, is providing an online petition for the public to support pending legislation to update campus safety provisions of the Higher Education Act.
This legislation, approved by the Senate in July (S.1642), will be considered in the House of Representatives this fall. The public is encouraged to act now while there’s still time to make a difference!
Why Sign the Higher Education Act Reauthorization Petition?
A reauthorization of the Higher Education Act will require colleges and universities to alert campus communities about any “immediate threat to the health or safety of students or staff.” In addition, the measure would create a student safety grant program to help colleges and universities improve their campus safety and emergency response systems. Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) authored S.1642. Congressman George Miller (D-CA) will likely introduce similar legislation in the coming months.
