A Wilfrid Laurier University student has died from injuries sustained in a campus fire on April 14. The 19-year-old was a first-year undergraduate student on the varsity rugby team.

The fire broke out around 6:00 p.m. on the forth floor of the school’s college hall residence. The university’s fire sprinkler system worked properly during the blaze. The fire was contained quickly and school officials expect mostly water and smoke damage.

The college houses up to 320 students; however, it was not at full capacity during the fire due to exam schedules. About 150 students were evacuated and relocated to nearby hotels.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
