Cameras, Guards Being Added to Northwestern U. Dorms

Published: January 7, 2007

EVANSTON, Ill. – The installation of security cameras and the hiring of 22-24 uniformed security guards is planned for next fall at Northwestern University.

The installation of alarms in the residence halls, however, has been postponed. According to school officials, an online survey of students indicated most were not in favor of placing alarms on non-essential doors. Student opposition to the devices led the university to further deliberate the matter.

Last year, nine intruders entered Northwestern’s residence halls, which prompted a security assessment by a consultant.

The newly hired officers will work at the larger residence halls from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. They will not be armed.

Dorm security cameras will be monitored 24/7. Additionally, area lighting will be reevaluated.

Fraternity and sorority houses will also receive a security assessment that recommends upgrades. Whether or not the suggested changes will be implemented, however, will be up to each house.
